PR Bison Grass Vodka Essence 20 ml

Bison grass vodka is one of the most idiosyncratic and best-loved specialities in the world of spirits. It smells of a summer meadow and tastes like nothing else – a herbal, sweet, almost pastry-like aroma that comes from the fragrant grass bison are said to prefer above all else. Once you have tried it with apple juice you will understand why it enjoys something close to cult status.

The secret lies in a natural aromatic compound found in certain sweet-scented grasses – the very same one that gives new-mown hay, tonka beans and sweet woodruff their sweet, vanilla-like fragrance. In vodka, the effect is both unexpected and addictively good.

Colour & Appearance

The finished vodka takes on a pale, straw-yellow tint with a faint green shimmer – like spring light through a blade of grass. It is clear and light, and tells you at once that this is no ordinary vodka.

Nose

The nose is unmistakable: new-mown hay dried in the sun, vanilla pod and sweet woodruff. Soon marzipan, coconut and a floral note of lavender and camomile arrive. It smells of summer holidays, a hayloft and freshly baked biscuits all at once.

Palate

The taste is soft and lightly sweet. The herbal grass note comes first, followed by vanilla, almond and a creamy hint of coconut. Beneath that lies a fresh, green nuance – like cucumber peel or fresh herbs – and a mild spiciness of cinnamon and white pepper. The mouthfeel is smooth and rounded. The whole is both refreshing and comforting, and considerably more complex than you would expect of a vodka.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, sweet and herbal. Hay, vanilla and a little almond fade out slowly and leave a clean, pleasant warmth.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be served straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished vodka. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

  • With cloudy apple juice, ice and a pinch of cinnamon – tastes like apple pie in a glass.
  • Well chilled as a shot with smoked fish and pickled vegetables.
  • With ginger ale and a slice of fresh cucumber.
  • In a grassy sour with lemon, sugar syrup and egg white.
  • With pear juice and a little elderflower for an elegant long drink.

About the Essence

The PR series (Prestige) is home to many of our classics, and Bison Grass is one of the most distinctive. It is an obvious choice if you want to surprise your guests with something they may never have tasted before – and they are certain to ask for more.

The pairing with apple juice deserves a special mention. Choose a cloudy juice that is not too sweet, fill the glass with ice and top with a pinch of ground cinnamon. Many who taste the mix for the first time swear it contains apple pie and custard. You would be hard pressed to find a simpler signature drink.
