UP Sour Mash Whisky Essence 20 ml
UP Sour Mash Whisky Essence 20 ml
There is whiskey that scratches on the way down, and there is whiskey that slips down like velvet. UP Sour Mash belongs firmly in the second camp. The essence gives your spirit the soft, sweet and faintly sooty character that has made the sour mash style one of the best-loved in the world – a whiskey that is just as much at home in a tumbler with ice as in a tall glass topped up with cola. You will find no smoke and no peat here, only warmth, vanilla and a sweetness that lingers.
Colour & Appearance
The finished drink takes on a warm amber colour, with coppery-red glints when the light passes through the glass. It looks full-bodied, clings softly to the side of the glass and tells you before the first sip that this is a generous, easy-drinking whiskey.
Nose
The nose opens with vanilla pod and melted toffee sauce, closely followed by a fruity streak of ripe banana – the signature that makes the style so easy to recognise. Behind the fruit sit toasted corn, maple syrup and a dry note of charred oak. Give the glass a swirl and a little liquorice, nutmeg and a hint of freshly roasted nuts come forward too.
Palate
The first impression is sweet and round: soft brown sugar, vanilla fudge and buttered cornbread. On the mid-palate a pleasant oakiness builds, together with banana bread, dried apricot and a pinch of cinnamon. What sets sour mash apart from spicier styles of whiskey is its softness – the flavours are rounded, almost silky, with a lightly sooty sweetness that brings charcoal and toasted marshmallows to mind. The body is medium-full, and the sweetness is kept in check throughout by that dry oak note.
Finish
The finish is medium-long, warm and clean. Caramel and vanilla fade slowly, leaving a note of toasted oak, a little white pepper and a faint, aniseed-like sweetness. No bitterness, no smoke – just a gentle glow that invites the next sip.
How to Use
The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and is ready to enjoy straight away, although the flavours are happy to be left to marry for a day or so. One 20 ml bottle makes 750 ml of finished spirit. You will find full instructions on the bottle’s label.
Serving Suggestions
- On the rocks – one large ice cube brings out the vanilla and tempers the sweetness.
- The classic: with cola and a wedge of lime in a tall glass packed with ice.
- With ginger ale and a couple of dashes of bitters for a spicy, thirst-quenching highball.
- In a whiskey sour with freshly squeezed lemon, sugar syrup and egg white.
- As a flavouring in barbecue sauce, in a glaze for spare ribs or in a toffee sauce for ice cream.
